TheBabyWearer.com Forums FAQ

Here you can find answers to questions about how the board works. Use the links or search box below to find your way around.

General Posting Guidelines

  • Use a descriptive title for your post. For example, a post titled “need help with back carries in wrap” is more appropriate than a post titled “help me”.
  • Use the relevant forum. Moderators will move off-topic posts -- don’t take it personally, it just helps anyone who's browsing.
  • Avoid cross posting. (Defined as posting the same topic in two or more locations.) If you are unsure of where your topic should go, take a guess and a moderator will move the thread for you if needed.
  • Be gentle with other community members. Do not post comments that are derogatory, insulting, inflammatory, baiting, harassing, humiliating, intended to question others’ character or intentions, or are generally mean-spirited. Use of the private messaging (PM) system to insult or harass members is also in violation of our community standards for conduct and should be reported to a moderator.
  • Respect the diversity of the community. Keep in mind that we are a diverse community and what unites us is babywearing. You are welcome to share with others how your faith helped or guided you but please do not proselytize any religious beliefs or practices as others may not share your point of view. Inclusion of phrasing which personalizes your viewpoint such as "in my opinion" (IMO) or "in my experience" (IME) or similar, does wonders in helping everyone to feel comfortable when views that are different to their own are expressed. The same applies to political views.
  • Have an awareness of sensitive and controversial topics. There are many subjects (religion, politics, war, abortion, racism, etc.) that can be very divisive when discussed in a public forum. Comments that may be intended to support one point of view may be upsetting or hurtful to someone with the opposite point of view. While TBW does not have an outright ban on any specific topic, the moderator team will lock and/or remove any threads or posts which alienate or disrespect the community. Please remember that some comments might be appropriate in your own living room, but that doesn't make them appropriate in this diverse community of babywearers.
  • Respect copyright. Do not post something written by someone else without their express permission. This includes reprinting of articles, song lyrics, emails/private messages written by other people, images, etc. If you do not own rights to the material, provide a link to the piece rather than copying it on the forums. In addition, any unauthorized copying and pasting of TBW content and/or another poster's comments or pictures is in direct violation of our Terms of Use. The moderator team will impose penalties for reported cases as we deem feasible and appropriate.
  • Avoid inappropriate language and subject matter. This includes the use of profanity and the posting of sexually explicit content. If you’re not sure whether or not something is appropriate, please consider if you’d say it in front of your mother/boss/priest/rabbi/great-grandfather/toddler – if the answer is no, you probably don’t want to say it here.
  • Respect your site hosts. Do not recommend services, articles etc. on other websites when those services etc. are already provided here, and do not solicit for people to join alternative groups offering similar services.
  • Respect other online communities. Do not post links to other forums with the express purpose of encouraging members to join those forums to debate a topic. This is disrespectful to other online communities, and can encourage trolling and have negative impact on our community.
  • Seek permission before surveying for information on the forums. Please contact an administrator before posting to seek information for any commercial or external use. This includes polling members to provide data for a research paper, a new product, etc.
  • Avoid posting in private forums or chat to discuss people/threads on public forums. This is akin to ‘talking behind someone’s back’ and is not conducive to a friendly community atmosphere. We do support the discussion of issues in their own right, and moderators will help facilitate those discussions when appropriate. Also, as this is an English-language site, please either post only in English or provide a translation if you post in another language.
  • Avoid public criticism of the moderating/administration team. Do not post on the public forums to criticize moderator/administrator decisions. These issues are generally best discussed in private (by PM or chat) or, in some cases, in the TBW Roundtable. If you have concerns or questions about the actions of the moderating team, please feel free to send a private message to the site administrator (Crystal).
  • Please remember that this is a private site and "freedom of speech" does not apply. As this is a community, personal expression may be limited by the need to respect the beliefs, feelings and views of others.
  • If a member violates any of these rules, that member's post(s) and/or thread(s) may be edited or deleted by a member of the moderator team. In most cases, a moderator will contact the poster via PM to let them know that an edit has been made, but in some cases the moderator may instead describe the reason for the edit at the end of the post.

Depending on the violation, a warning may be given. In order for a warning to be issued, a minimum of five moderators must agree that a violation has occurred. The member will be notified via private message that the warning has been issued. An inflammatory or disrespectful response to the warning will result in a second warning.

If a member receives three warnings, a 7-day site-wide ban will be imposed. A violation after the 7-day ban has been lifted will result in a 30-day ban. Any violation after that will result in a permanent ban.

If guidelines are violated, members may be placed on probation, which involves certain the restriction of selected privileges for a period of time while the moderator team monitors the member's activity.

Vendor and Hobbyist Posting Guidelines

There is an additional set of rules for babywearing vendors and hobbyists who post here. Please carefully read these rules before posting, as posts in violation of these rules will be deleted with no discussion, and repeat offenders will be banned.

Avatars

An avatar is the picture featured under your username when you post. You may upload your own avatar by editing your member profile in the User Control Panel (Settings). Guidelines for avatars include:
  • The avatar must be no larger than 90x145 pixels and <=6KB
  • The avatar must be static - no animation.
  • Vendors of babywearing products may use their logo as an avatar if they wish. Other promotional avatars are not allowed, including logos, images with urls, business or brand names.
You may have noticed that some members here have cute cartoon/doll avatars of mums with babies in different types of baby carriers. You can make one of these for free using the Mamma's Milk doll maker.

Solicitation on the Forums (SPAM)

Spam, defined as any content intended to solicit sales/trades from other TBW members, is not allowed outside of designated areas. The following activities are considered spam, and will result in moderation:
  • Posting items/services for sale/trade on forums other than the appropriate For Sale or Trade (FSOT) forum. This includes comments about your intent to sell/trade a particular item/service and/or links to your items on FSOT.
  • Repeatedly recommending or promoting a particular product, vendor or website. The balance, frequency and repetitiveness will be considered, as well as a members' conduct in other parts of the community, in determining whether or not a particular post is spam.
  • Posting links to your business, or to a web site that you have a financial interest in. The exception to this rule is in a case where you are linking to information of value to the topic at hand that is not available elsewhere.
  • Sending private messages (PMs) or emails to solicit for money (for business or charity). This is an abuse of the PM/email system and will result in loss of those privileges.
  • Posting ‘in search of’ (ISO) messages on the public boards. (An invitation for spam.) There is an ISO forum specifically for this type of post in the FSOT area of the site.
  • Posting to solicit funds, free carriers, etc. on the public boards. Please use the Gifting sub-forum in FSOT for these purposes.
You may post carriers or other goods/services for sale on the appropriate FSOT forum. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the specific FSOT rules before posting.

If applicable, you should also review the vendor specific posting guidelines for more information on appropriate forum conduct for vendors and their representatives.

TBW MarketPlace Posting Guidelines

The TBW MarketPlace forums are a service provided by thebabywearer.com (TBW) for our members. The MarketPlace consists of several distinct areas:
  • Vendors, Hobbyists, and Custom Sellers Listings – Vendors and hobbyists can list their wares for sale here. Only subscribed members may post in this forum, and access does require a small fee. Visit your User CP (Settings) > Paid Subscriptions page for information on pricing and to request access.
  • For Sale or Trade (FSOT) – Personal sellers may list all baby carriers and related items for sale or trade here. Members with a minimum of 30 posts AND 30 days membership may start sale threads. Members who do not yet meet those requirements may view FSOT listings and reply to them. Members who haven't met the 30/30 requirements should not post in another member's FSOT thread to offer items FS/FT ~OR~ offer items FS/FT through the private message system.
  • In Search Of (ISO) – Members can list items they are in search of here. Members with a minimum of 30 posts AND 30 days membership may browse this forum and start new threads. Members who do not yet meet those requirements will not be able to view the forum. Once the requirements are met, access may be requested via this thread.
  • FSOT-OT – For listing items that are not directly related to babywearing. Only subscribed members may post in this forum, and access does require a small fee. Visit your User CP (Settings) > Paid Subscriptions page for information on pricing and to request access.
  • FSOT Feedback – Post your feedback for trading partners here. This area is meant for person-to-person transactions; feedback on vendors should be posted in the Reviews area of the site.
Members should be aware that TBW MarketPlace is a buyer beware environment; TBW is not responsible for what happens in transactions initiated through these venues. Moderators are provided to read threads and ensure rules (such as listing a price) are enforced; however, their role is not to serve as a mediator in disputes.

Violation of the TBW MarketPlace rules or a pattern of negative feedback could result in the suspension of your privilege to buy and sell through this forum or, ultimately, removal from this site.

Please see the notices at the top of the individual forums for more information on posting guidelines for this area of the site.

Moderation

The moderating team is here to help guide and support the community. Moderators/administrators reserve the right to lock, edit or remove any post at any time. They will determine what constitutes spam, abuse, etc.

Please do not post on the public forums to criticize moderator/administrator decisions. These issues are generally best discussed in private (by PM or chat) or, in some cases, in the TBW Roundtable. If you have concerns or questions about the actions of the moderating team, please feel free to send a private message to the site administrator (Crystal).

Remember that your moderators are volunteers, giving of their free time for the love of the community and babywearing. Please be gentle with them!

Customer Service Representatives Posting Guidelines

There are rules about customer service representatives (or other related roles) talking about their employer and related products.

Following are examples of when you may or may not respond regarding a particular product, based on whether or not you are employed by a manufacturer or distributor of the product.

Assume for a moment that you are the customer service representative for the manufacturer of a product called the Diggedy Dog pouch. If someone posts asking:
  • What pouch would suit me best in my situation? – You may not post: "Have you considered a Diggedy Dog pouch?" As the product becomes known, community members will naturally recommend the carrier when it is an appropriate answer to the question asked.
  • What baby carrier would suit me best in my situation? – You may recommend a pouch style carrier if it would be an appropriate fit for the circumstances. You may not post: "Have you considered a Diggedy Dog pouch?"
  • What are the differences between the Diggedy Dog pouch and the Cool Cat pouch? – You may only post to clarify comments made by other members about the particular product. Be fair and factual, and stick to information specifically required to address any misunderstanding previously posted.
  • Where can I find a pouch with studs, go-fast stripes and wig-wags? – Even if that pouch is the only one with these features, leave this question for others to answer. As others become more familiar with the product they will mention it more often.
  • Can you tell me about fabrics/options/features/shipping/etc. for Diggedy Dog? – a private message or email to the individual is permitted. You may not post pictures of your own Diggedy Dog pouch in response.
  • How do I use my pouch/Diggedy Dog? – Dive in! Your expertise will be appreciated. But remember the spirit of the forum; you are trying to help someone, not sell your employer’s product.
Assume that you are the customer service representative for the distributor of a product called the Diggedy Dog pouch. If someone posts asking:
  • What pouch/baby carrier would suit me best in my situation? – You may recommend a pouch style carrier in general, or the Diggedy Dog pouch specifically.
  • What are the differences between the Diggedy Dog pouch and the Cool Cat pouch? – You can answer as fully as you wish (factual information about the product/s compared to other similar ones).
  • Where can I find a pouch with studs, go-fast stripes and wig-wags? – You may recommend the Diggedy Dog pouch specifically when appropriate. You may not refer people to your employer to purchase products.
  • How do I use my pouch/Diggedy Dog? – Dive in! Your expertise will be appreciated.

Additional guidelines for CSRs:
  • CSRs must disclose their role by noting “customer service representative (or appropriate title) for XYZ Company” in their signature files. The disclosure should not include a link to the website.
  • Do not post to recommend other members shop with your employer.
  • Sales or promotional announcements offered by your employer may only be posted in the Vendor For Sale or Trade forum. If you will be announcing a sale or anything that promotes your employer's products, you must purchase your own subscription to the Vendor For Sale or Trade forum. You may do this under User CP (Settings)- Paid Subscriptions.
  • Do not enter into discussions about your employer’s business practices, including discussion of your own personal customer service experiences with the business.
  • Please avoid posting in response to any customer service questions on the boards, except to clarify or correct misinformation posted by others. Customer service issues should be handled via PM or email.
  • Please be extra aware of the tone of your posts when discussing products you represent. Your goal should be to help members use their carriers effectively, not to hype the product with the hopes of increasing sales.
Guidelines regarding posting pictures by CSRs:
  • You may post general stash pictures that include Diggedy Dog pouches, but not a picture of solely or primarily Diggedy Dog pouches.
  • You may post a thread that includes an action picture of yourself or a family member wearing a Diggedy Dog pouch, keeping in mind that your tone should not be to hype your employer's product, but to share your babywearing experience.
  • Remember that you or your employer may post whatever you'd like about the product, services, promotions, etc. in the Vendor Marketplace forum (as long as you've subscribed to it).
